SOUTHERN AFRICA – Madagascar revives cooperation with Botswana

Madagascar aims to give new momentum to its cooperation with Botswana as part of a closer alignment with SADC countries. The Head of State has advocated for fraternal cooperation between the two nations, focused on development and the sharing of African expertise.

This “fraternal” cooperation was highlighted by Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, Head of State, upon his return from an official visit to Botswana. The visit aimed to relaunch bilateral ties, with discussions held with Botswana’s President Duma Gideon Boko. Key sectors identified for cooperation include agriculture, fisheries, road infrastructure, land resources, mining, and renewable energy.

Beyond specific agreements, the visit reflects Madagascar’s desire to strengthen its regional strategy within the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Colonel Randrianirina emphasized that Botswana was one of the early supporters of the Republic’s Refoundation process. The two nations plan to develop new bilateral agreements within thirty days and are considering the removal of visa requirements for their citizens.

Furthermore, the partnership seeks to leverage Botswana’s expertise in renewable energy to support Madagascar’s goals for clean energy and climate resilience. President Boko reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to supporting Madagascar’s development and its ongoing political transition.
