HIGHER EDUCATION – Universities strengthen graduate employability

Higher education stakeholders gathered on Friday, October 2, at the Hotel Panorama in Antananarivo to discuss ways to enhance the employability of graduates. Organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in collaboration with the French Embassy in Madagascar and the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), the workshop focused on the professionalization of training programs and bridging the gap with the job market.

Discussions centered on actions to better prepare students for professional integration. Participants were divided into four working groups. The first examined the quality of training and its alignment with labor market needs. The second focused on professionalization and transversal skills. The remaining two groups addressed employability support structures and the status of student-entrepreneurs.

Each group had ninety minutes to assess the current situation, identify areas for improvement, and propose concrete actions. The goal is to develop applicable strategies for institutions and better define the roles of various stakeholders.

The workshop is part of the Tafa project, funded by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and implemented since 2024 by the AUF and Humanity & Inclusion across four regions of Madagascar. The project has already established three work-study university training programs. A success support pathway has also assisted 275 students, providing international certifications, development of transversal skills, and support for project ideation.

The meeting brought together academic actors, support structures, institutional partners, and the socio-economic sector to identify measures to better align training with the realities of the job market.
