Twenty-four minutes to question his origins and reconnect with his identity. Malagasy director Darcy Andriamendrikaindrindra won the Best Documentary Short Film award at the Pan-African International Film Festival in Cannes, held from October 21 to 25, 2026, for his film Madagascar: What is left of me here?.
“This recognition touches me deeply. Thank you to the festival, to those who participated in the film, and to you who support it,” he stated after receiving the distinction.
Through this personal documentary, the director reflects on his journey, marked by his departure from Madagascar at a young age and his childhood in Belgium. After fifteen years spent in that country, a two-month stay on the Great Island in 2023 rekindled his desire to reconnect with his roots. He then picked up his camera and returned to the land of his childhood to explore the ties that still bind him to his native country.
Family memories, traditions, and music form the common thread of this narrative, which questions the place of Malagasy culture in his identity after several years of estrangement.
Following this award, several screenings are planned in Brussels, France, and Madagascar. A first meeting with the public will take place on November 12 at 7:00 PM at the RITCS cinema in Brussels. After this tour, the documentary is expected to be released for free on YouTube between late December and February.
