Burkina Faso is in celebration mode. Thousands of people gathered on Wednesday evening in Ouagadougou and several regions of the country to mark the fourth anniversary of Ibrahim Traoré’s rise to power. Organized by the government, the ceremony, dubbed the “Night of the RPP,” was dedicated to celebrating the Progressive and Popular Revolution, the term used by authorities to describe their political project.
At the Place de la Révolution in Ouagadougou, the evening featured performances by artists, speeches, and tributes to Captain Ibrahim Traoré. The ceremony, broadcast on national television, continued late into the night. Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo described it as a “memorable night” and a “historic mobilization” around the RPP.
Captain Ibrahim Traoré took the helm of Burkina Faso in September 2022 following the power shift on September 30, which ended the tenure of Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba. Upon his arrival, Traoré prioritized the reconquest of territory and the fight against armed groups. He subsequently launched the RPP, focusing on national sovereignty, local resource mobilization, and economic transformation.
The transition period, initially set to end in July 2024, has been extended by five years until July 2029. This extension allows the head of state, the Prime Minister, and the president of the legislative assembly to run in future elections. Since taking power, Traoré has emphasized economic transformation, launching projects in mining, industry, and agriculture, often drawing parallels to the legacy of Thomas Sankara, particularly through the promotion of local products like the Faso Dan Fani fabric.
Diplomatically, Ouagadougou has strengthened ties with Mali and Niger within the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and shifted international partnerships toward Russia, following the end of military cooperation with France. Despite efforts to bolster security forces and the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), armed group attacks persist in several areas, particularly in the north.
