SUSPECTED KIDNAPPING – Crowd attacks a man presumed to be mentally unstable

A 33-year-old man was attacked by a crowd yesterday in Anosimasina Itaosy after allegedly attempting to kidnap an eight-month-old baby. According to witnesses, he approached the mother, snatched the child from her arms, and struck her.

A passerby intervened to protect the mother and her baby before local residents gathered and violently assaulted the suspect. The police arrived shortly after and took him into custody; he sustained injuries from the beating.

The suspect’s family claims he suffers from mental health issues and had previously been confined at home. He reportedly broke down the door to escape while his relatives were out. While the family acknowledges the public’s anger—fueled by growing fears over child abductions—they emphasize that only the police should determine the facts. The initial witness reported that the man bit him and claimed he absolutely had to take the child because he needed money.

The suspect is currently in police custody. In recent days, lynchings directed at suspected kidnappers have been on the rise.
