The company Enelec has responded to criticism regarding power outages reported in several cities across Madagascar, where it operates power plants on behalf of Jirama. In a statement, the company asserts that these disruptions are linked to “major technical problems beyond its control” that have affected some of its facilities.
The company indicated that its technical teams have been mobilized since the incidents began to find solutions in collaboration with Jirama, with the goal of ensuring the continuity of electricity supply for users as much as possible.
This response follows remarks made by the President of the Refondation regarding power cuts in certain localities served by Enelec-operated plants. In the city of Toamasina, for instance, power outages continued last week despite authorities announcing the end of load shedding after providing Jirama with new equipment.
The Head of State had called on Enelec, an independent private power producer operating in the cities of Antsiranana, Mahajanga, and Toamasina, to ensure that electricity supply in these areas is restored to normal as quickly as possible. The President criticized the fact that Jirama must pay the service provider up to 65% of the amount due regardless of actual production. “Yet, their production seems to drop every time we deliver generators to support production,” he remarked on Monday on the sidelines of a ceremony organized with the UNDP at the Iavoloha State Palace. The President also requested that Enelec take all necessary measures to prevent any failures in the production process.
“All company employees are working day and night to quickly resolve these technical issues and increase electricity production,” the company emphasized in its statement. The company stated that it understands the difficulties faced by the population due to power supply disruptions and reiterated its commitment to the Malagasy people during difficult times, citing its intervention during emergencies, such as after Cyclone Gezani, to illustrate its role as an actor involved in crisis management.
