REGIONAL COOPERATION – Madagascar’s dossier on the agenda of the 28th Ordinary Meeting of the SADC Ministerial Committee

The progress and prospects for the implementation of the Refoundation program were presented to the member states of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alice N’Diaye, participated in the 28th Ordinary Meeting of the Ministerial Committee of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, held on July 16 and 17 in Salima, Malawi. According to a ministry statement, she provided an update on the organization of national consultations under the aegis of the Council of Christian Churches in Madagascar (FFKM), as well as the revision of the electoral list and the electoral timeline during the review of Madagascar’s situation.

The Minister emphasized “the leadership of the Malagasy people, inclusivity reflected by the participation of all components of Malagasy society in the national consultations, and national ownership as conditions for the success of the process,” the ministry stated. It recalled that Madagascar’s objectives are “ultimately to establish an effective and responsible democratic and institutional governance framework to prevent the resurgence of cyclical crises in Madagascar.”

In her address, Alice N’Diaye also reaffirmed Madagascar’s commitment to strengthened coordination between SADC, the African Union, and the United Nations to ensure “coherent, complementary, and effective” support for the Refoundation process, the ministry reported. She also recalled the central role of SADC in this support, in accordance with the principle of subsidiarity.

At the opening of the meeting, SADC Executive Secretary Elias Magosi highlighted SADC’s interventions in the process of restoring constitutional order in Madagascar. He specifically spoke of “the progress of reconciliation initiatives” led in Madagascar under the organization’s mediation, the SADC statement reported. However, he also insisted on “the importance of regional cooperation” as well as “unity, solidarity, and the determination to act collectively among member countries,” values upon which the Community is based and which constitute its strength, the statement further emphasized. “While Southern Africa remains one of the most peaceful and resilient regions on the African continent, continued collaboration is essential to preserve peace and prosperity,” he added.
