The National Nutrition Office (ONN) has moved. This government-affiliated body now has its own headquarters: a three-story building featuring 35 offices with a capacity for over 50 staff members. Its construction is set to bolster the institution’s profile while enhancing multisectoral coordination in nutrition initiatives, program monitoring, knowledge management, and institutional communication—all essential actions to address the challenges of malnutrition.
The new infrastructure was inaugurated on Thursday in the presence of the High Council for Transition (HCR) member, General Lucien Rabearimanana, Prime Minister Mamitiana Rajaonarison, several government members, parliamentarians, and representatives of technical and financial partners. The ceremony highlighted both the progress made and the remaining challenges in the fight against malnutrition.
While the chronic malnutrition rate dropped from 39% in 2021 to 37% in 2026, the goal is to reduce it to 30% by the end of 2027. To achieve this, the Prime Minister stated that the State’s financial contribution to the ONN budget will be significantly increased. General Rabearimanana remains convinced that cooperation and coordination among all stakeholders are the keys to success in fighting malnutrition and promoting Madagascar’s development. He also reiterated the State’s commitment to supporting the ONN both technically and financially.
According to the National Director of the UPNNC, Dr. Fidy Razafindrasata, this new headquarters enhances the ONN’s visibility at both national and international levels and provides a work environment tailored to the institution’s needs. The Office now possesses a sustainable asset rather than relying on rented premises. The construction was made possible through the Nutrition Resilience Project (PARN), with support from the World Bank.
