The skies connecting Madagascar and the Comoros will reopen after years of interruption. The inaugural flight operated by Madagascar Airlines is scheduled for July 30, 2026. This timeline was announced by both the Malagasy Ministry of Transport and Meteorology and the Embassy of the Union of the Comoros in Antananarivo. Two weekly flights are planned, operating every Thursday and Sunday.
According to information from the national carrier Madagascar Airlines, the route will follow an Antananarivo – Mahajanga – Moroni path. This new connection aims to facilitate travel between the two countries and strengthen economic, tourism, and family ties between the Malagasy and Comorian communities.
Air links between the two nations were officially suspended in July 2022. Following the Covid crisis, flights had briefly resumed before being halted again after alleged gold bars from the Great Island were seized in the archipelago. Since then, passengers have been forced to transit through Nairobi, Kenya, or Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
This week, the Ambassador of the Union of the Comoros to Madagascar, Caabi Elyachroutu Mohamed, held several meetings with authorities, including Malagasy Minister of Transport and Meteorology Herizo Ramanambola Andrianavalona. Discussions included the possibility of the Comorian airline Royal Air operating this route. Additionally, the diplomat met with the Director General of Madagascar Airlines, Rado Rabarilala, to discuss future development prospects, including a potential Moroni–Antananarivo–Marseille route.
