Demands for money, contested searches, and misunderstood controls: passengers are questioning the practices of certain agents at Ivato International Airport. Their testimonies raise questions about how complaints are handled and how responsibilities are identified.
Several passengers have expressed dissatisfaction with the checks carried out at Ivato International Airport. They report persistent demands for money or gifts from some agents, procedures that are allegedly intentionally slowed down, and inspections they deem arbitrary. According to them, these practices are intended to pressure them into paying to speed up their passage.
Users also denounce the conditions under which their luggage is searched and handled. “During my last trip, items disappeared from my luggage and my suitcase was damaged,” testified Stéphane, a passenger, yesterday.
Travel document verifications also raise questions. “My daughter, who was leaving to study abroad, was blocked at the airport, supposedly because her visa was problematic. Why did the validity of her visa suddenly become an issue before being accepted as soon as a few dollars were paid?” asks a father. He denounces the “last-minute” pressure exerted to force travelers to pay under the threat of missing their flight.
Sociologist Lanto Ratsida notes that these issues are not just individual behavioral problems but structural ones. With multiple entities operating at the airport, such as the Civil Aviation of Madagascar (ACM), Customs, the Air and Border Police (PAF), and others, identifying responsibility remains difficult. Ratsida suggests increasing surveillance, implementing stricter disciplinary sanctions, and improving staff working conditions to combat corruption.
