Papa James, who passed away on August 17 in South Africa, is expected to be repatriated to Madagascar soon. His family has launched a mobilization effort to bring his remains back home.
Preparations for Papa James’ final journey are underway. The Malagasy artist, who died in South Africa, is set to return to his homeland. His family is pursuing the necessary procedures for repatriation and has launched a fundraising campaign of 28 million ariary to cover the costs. The goal is to allow the man who dedicated decades to Malagasy music to rest among his loved ones.
“We won’t have to wait much longer for his remains to arrive in the country,” his wife shared. She also expressed gratitude to the individuals and institutions that have supported the family during this difficult time, specifically mentioning the PRRM, his wife, and the Malagasy government.
On social media, the family expressed their gratitude to friends and anonymous donors for their contributions, prayers, and messages of comfort. As many family members are musicians themselves with limited means, financing the repatriation has been particularly challenging.
After being repatriated from South Africa, Papa James’ remains will be taken to Tsarasotra, in Ambositra, for a final tribute. According to his wife, the farewell ceremony will take place in his village before his burial in Alatsinainy Miarinarivo, Tsarasotra, Ambositra.
This return home fulfills the artist’s wish to see Madagascar again, particularly Diego (Antsiranana), the city where his musical career began. Born Mayoub Caid Jean Gaby, Papa James left a significant mark on Malagasy music, particularly in the genres of salegy and musical animation.
