Yesterday in Anosy, the Ordinary Criminal Court sentenced the former interim Head of State and retired Corps General, Richard Ravalomanana, to 10 years of forced labor following a day-long trial.
The former President of the Senate arrived at 9 a.m. in a 4×4 vehicle, escorted by prison units. The trial, which began at 10 a.m., was attended by the accused’s family, numerous lawyers, and security personnel. The charges included complicity in murder and intentional injury related to the violent suppression of protests in the capital between September and October 2025.
During the proceedings, the prosecution questioned the accused regarding his nickname, “General Bomb,” and his alleged role in ordering security forces to use violence against demonstrators. While the defense argued that there was no material evidence or direct orders linking the General to the violence, the court ultimately delivered a guilty verdict.
Upon hearing the sentence, the former official appeared visibly distressed. His legal team has announced an appeal to the Court of Cassation. He is currently being transferred to the high-security prison in Imerintsiatosika.
