The Bevoay intake has been desilted once again to allow for the irrigation of a portion of the 8,000-hectare plain. Frequently facing flow and water supply issues, the Mangoky plain undergoes regular maintenance aimed at keeping the four sluice gates of the Bevoay intake operational and clearing several kilometers of canals.
Following maintenance last July, which forced users to cut off water flow, three of the four sluice gates are now operational and the canals have been cleared of silt. Since August 25, a flow rate of 40 m³ of water per second has been irrigating the 8,000 hectares currently under redevelopment. “These improvement works ensure a second cropping season for the farmers of Bas Mangoky, whereas for years they could only rely on one season precisely because of irrigation problems,” explains Luc Findrama, Regional Director of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty for the Atsimo Andrefana region.
Beyond water issues, conflicts over land ownership remain unresolved. Following the land parceling initiated by the State in 2023, the identity of the true owners and the actual plots distributed remain unclear. “We ask the State to seriously look into the land ownership issue that concerns us. Some individuals claim to be owners, while others who have worked the land for years claim the same. Radical solutions are needed as the second season approaches,” a farmer explains.
