Behind every image lies a perspective, a story, and a memory to preserve. In Madagascar, six professional photographers have just had their careers officially recognized. Members of the Union of Professional Photographers of Madagascar (UPPM)—Chénila Nathoo, Yves Randriarimalala (known as Teg Yves), Sitraka Andrianatoandro, Christian Raoelison (known as Kriss Raoelison), Mahefa Dimbiniaina Randrianarivelo (known as Matchbox), and Toliniaina Razafiarivony—were honored during a ceremony held yesterday at the National Library of Madagascar in Anosy.
Under the patronage of the Ministry of Communication and Culture, Minister O’Gascar Fenosoa awarded them the title of ‘Knight of the Order of Arts, Letters, and Culture.’ This distinction recognizes their career paths, professional commitment, and their contribution to the development, promotion, and influence of Malagasy photography.
Through their work, expertise, and dedication, these six photographers help document Malagasy society and bear witness to their era. Their work also contributes to preserving the country’s visual memory and passing on a heritage to future generations.
This distinction goes beyond individual recognition. It highlights the role of professional photography in the cultural, social, and economic life of Madagascar. Through their lens, photographers contribute to the enhancement of heritage, the construction of collective memory, and the promotion of Malagasy creativity.
Founded in 2013, the UPPM is a non-profit professional association that brings together professional photographers working in Madagascar. For over 10 years, it has worked toward the professionalization, promotion, and structuring of Malagasy photography. The Union defends the professional interests of its members, particularly their copyright, and advocates for better recognition and protection of the profession. It also supports photographers through training, experience sharing, and the transmission of skills.
