AMBOHIDAHY – Taxi-be hits nine pedestrians

A taxi-be (public minibus) struck pedestrians inside the Ambohidahy tunnel. Nine people were victims of the accident, two of whom succumbed to their injuries, while seven others were wounded.

The tragedy occurred yesterday around 2:30 PM inside the Ambohidahy tunnel. A second-class firefighter in his thirties, married and a father of three, along with a 27-year-old female pedestrian whose identity remains unknown, were fatally struck by the minibus.

The vehicle, operating on line 186 from Analakely towards Anosy, was approaching the tunnel exit when it veered off course. It mounted the right sidewalk and struck the pedestrians present. Among the nine victims was firefighter Jean Jacques Ravaojanahary, from the 2022 class, who was on his way home to Fenoarivo after his shift.

Antananarivo Prefect Vonjy Maminjanahary Andriasy and Regional Chief Clémence Raharinirina arrived at the scene. While initial reports suggested brake failure, preliminary technical inspections indicated the brakes were functional. The driver is currently in police custody at the Tsaralalàna Accident Brigade for investigation.

At the Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona Hospital, doctors treated the victims, but the firefighter and the young woman passed away in intensive care. Family members and colleagues gathered at the hospital in mourning, while police secured the scene where personal belongings of the victims remained.
