TOAMASINA – Fire ravages Bazar Kely market

A devastating fire has swept through the Bazar Kely market in Toamasina, resulting in one fatality and significant material damage.

A human tragedy unfolded as a man lost his life in the blaze. His body, discovered early yesterday morning among the rubble, was completely charred, making identification impossible.

The fire, which broke out the previous night around 10:40 PM, raged for several hours before being brought under control around 5:30 AM.

At daybreak, Bazar Kely was a scene of desolation. Rows of kiosks had vanished, replaced by twisted metal frames and charred wooden structures. Goods that once filled the stalls were reduced to ash and dust. The air remained heavy with the acrid smell of smoke, and the ground was littered with warm debris.

Firefighters, supported by law enforcement and local residents, fought the blaze relentlessly. Despite the efforts of neighbors to help contain the flames, the intense heat and the density of the stalls made the intervention extremely difficult.

Initial estimates suggest that nearly 90% of the market has been destroyed, with over 3,000 kiosks lost to the flames. Material damages are estimated at several hundred million ariary. Traders, already struggling after the impact of Cyclone Gezani, have once again seen their livelihoods wiped out.

Local authorities visited the site to offer support to the victims and announced an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. While some speculate it may have started from a cooking mishap, only an official investigation will confirm the cause.

Bazar Kely has been ravaged by fire three or four times in the past without lasting preventive measures being implemented. Residents are now calling for the creation of access roads for emergency vehicles and the installation of additional fire hydrants to prevent future tragedies.
