TRANSPORT – Madagascar-Comoros air corridor restored

After a four-year interruption due to political tensions between Madagascar and the Comoros, the air link between the two countries resumed last Thursday. Direct flights had been suspended in July 2022 following a decision by Malagasy authorities based on health considerations.

To mark this milestone, an inaugural flight was operated by Madagascar Airlines between Antananarivo and Moroni on Thursday, July 30. The airline completed an Antananarivo-Mahajanga-Moroni loop, with a stopover in Mahajanga. The Minister of Transport and Meteorology was on board the ATR 72, accompanied by several dignitaries. An official ceremony was held at Amborovy International Airport.

“Both governments recognize that this inaugural flight is a success. The resumption of this link is very important. It is a great advantage for tourism professionals and especially for the Malagasy diaspora in the Comoros, estimated at over 20,000 people, as well as for Comorian residents in Madagascar,” the Minister stated. Madagascar Airlines will now operate this route twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays.

Two days after the resumption of Madagascar Airlines flights, Royal Air Comores also completed its first flight to Mahajanga last Saturday. The Director General of Adema (Aéroports de Madagascar) emphasized that this new route will strengthen human, economic, and cultural exchanges between the two nations.

This new route offers three weekly rotations on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, at a price of 200,000 KMF (approximately 2,017,900 Ariary) for a round-trip ticket. Kaed Sidine, Director of the Boeny Regional Tourism Office (ORTB), noted that this connection will boost the local economy and tourism in the Boeny region, facilitating trade and attracting investors.
