Launched last February, the process of drafting the National Sports Policy brings together the main components of the country’s sports sector. The Ministry, the Malagasy Olympic Committee, federations, high-level athletes, former sports figures, associations, and regional representatives are all called upon to contribute to defining this new vision.
Since then, the sports community has been waiting for concrete follow-up, as the future of sport and athletes depends on it. For Olympic judoka Fetra Ratsimiziva, the policy must serve as a true roadmap capable of modernizing the existing framework, coordinating stakeholders, and setting a common vision, from grassroots practice to high-level competition.
Madagascar is not starting from scratch. Fetra Ratsimiziva notes that the country already has several texts governing the sector, such as Law No. 97-014 of August 8, 1997, and various decrees regulating physical education, school sports, and sports organizations. The challenge of the new National Sports Policy (PNS) is to harmonize and modernize this framework into a coherent strategic system.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Alain Désiré Rasambany, provided reassurance regarding the timeline, stating that a national validation workshop is being prepared, with a presentation to the Council of Ministers in September and adoption by the National Assembly scheduled for October.
The importance of the PNS lies in its ability to provide a common direction for Malagasy sport, covering the entire chain from grassroots to elite levels, including training and talent detection. It also aims to improve governance, transparency, and accountability, while positioning sport as a tool for public health, education, and social inclusion. Infrastructure development and athlete career support remain essential pillars of this initiative.
