IN THE UPPER TOWN: Alimbetso brings together poetry and music

The first edition of Alimbetso will bring together poets, slam artists, and musicians in an intimate setting in Andohalo.

When words meet strings and traditional sounds, Malagasy culture reveals its full richness. On Saturday, June 20, the Vohimasina site in Andohalo will host the first edition of “Alimbetso,” a cultural event held as part of the Malagasy Language Month.

Organized by the Imanga Conseil agency, the event will begin at 6:30 PM in the Upper Town (Haute Ville). Conceived as an intimate gathering, this first edition will voluntarily limit access to fifty participants to preserve listening quality and foster genuine closeness between the artists and the audience.

Alimbetso will highlight the dialogue between contemporary Malagasy poetry and acoustic music inspired by local traditions. The goal is to create a space for expression where words, rhythms, and sounds respond to each other to promote the Malagasy language and cultural heritage.

The literary segment will feature poets Vanga and Inrianampisorona, accompanied by slam artist Na Hassi. Through poetry and slam, they will showcase the richness and vitality of contemporary oral creation.

Musically, the audience will be treated to Teta, a renowned figure of tsapiky guitar music, as well as DadaMo, who will resonate with the sounds of the angorodao. Together, they will bring a musical dimension rooted in tradition while engaging with the texts performed on stage.

Through this initiative, the organizers aim to contribute to the promotion of the Malagasy language and the transmission of the country’s cultural treasures. This first edition intends to offer a moment of sharing, listening, and discovery in one of the iconic locations of Antananarivo’s Upper Town.
