“16 MEASURES” – Hip-hop mobilizes for mental health

On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, the hip-hop community will take over Antsahamanitra on October 10 at 1:13 PM with the “16 MESURES” event. Spearheaded by Hip Hop Works Madagascar, the project aims to use music as a tool for awareness while contributing to the establishment of a hotline dedicated to suicide prevention and mental health support.

“This initiative stems from a stark observation: the suicide mortality rate in Madagascar has reached a worrying level, with approximately 6.1 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the latest estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO). As citizens, we cannot remain indifferent to this situation,” explains Luis Rasolondrainy of Hip Hop Works Madagascar, the project’s initiator.

The project continues partnerships with Good Loud Media, an American organization based in Oak Park, Illinois, which develops cultural and media content for vulnerable or at-risk populations, and Hip Hop 4 Peace, based in Los Angeles, which organizes artistic and charitable events centered on hip-hop, humanitarian aid, and peace.

The name “16 MESURES” refers to a classic unit of writing and performance in hip-hop. The initiative is structured around three components: the “16 MESURES Contest,” which invited rappers to write and perform a 16-bar verse on mental health; the “16 MESURES Combo,” featuring eight collaborations across generations; and the “16 MESURES Live” concert at Antsahamanitra.

Artists such as Bogota, Voaygang, Double G., and many others are scheduled to perform. Beyond the concert, “16 MESURES” serves as an awareness and fundraising campaign to support the mental health hotline project in Madagascar.
