ELECTRICITY – Load shedding returns during peak hours

Load shedding has returned during peak hours. Yesterday, several neighborhoods in the Antananarivo Interconnected Network (RIA) experienced two-hour power cuts in the evening. Jirama explains the cause: “Due to the drought currently being fully felt, the water level at the Andekaleka dam is also dropping.” This facility provides one-third of the electricity injected into the RIA, with a production deficit estimated at 18 MW.

This gap forces Jirama to implement rotating power cuts during peak demand hours, between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM. Each interruption lasts approximately two hours, coinciding with the time when household consumption is at its highest.

However, the company assures that it is seeking solutions to increase production. According to the meteorological department, conditions are favorable for artificial rain operations in the Andekaleka watershed. These are scheduled for this Thursday and tomorrow. This technique involves dispersing particles into clouds to promote rainfall, aiming to raise the dam’s water level and, ultimately, electricity production. Its effectiveness, however, depends on weather conditions.
