The eldest son of Lalao Rahantanirina, known as Nina, a former elected Member of Parliament for Mahajanga I, lost his life in a traffic accident in Manjakavaradrano, Maevatanàna district. According to reports, he was traveling to the Maevatanàna prison to deliver supplies to his mother. The vehicle he was driving veered off the road and overturned on National Route 4 (RN4). The driver died, while one woman was injured and two other men sustained minor injuries.
As of yesterday afternoon, the body remained in Maevatanàna. MP Nina, who is currently in pre-trial detention in the city, reportedly received authorization to leave prison to attend to her son’s funeral arrangements. The injured woman is expected to be transferred to the capital for further medical treatment.
The off-road vehicle had departed from Antananarivo heading toward Mahajanga. The accident occurred around 2:00 AM while traveling on the RN4 in Manjakavaradrano. After navigating a curve, the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.
“The driver lost his life and was therefore unable to explain what happened or what caused the accident. The other occupants of the vehicle were also unaware of the events, as they were all fast asleep,” stated the gendarmes in charge of the investigation.
MP Nina had already lost her daughter a few years ago. She has now lost her son. The former elected official and one of her sons are currently in pre-trial detention in connection with a case involving them. This new family tragedy adds to their already difficult situation.
