The justice system is taking action against the rise in kidnappings. Eleven people have been incarcerated following the opening of ten cases, several of which involve minor victims.
Eleven of the sixteen suspects involved in kidnapping cases have been placed in pre-trial detention, with men sent to Tsiafahy and women to Antanimora, announced the Public Prosecutor, Narindra Navalona Rakotoniaina, head of the Anosy prosecutor’s office, yesterday.
Since the beginning of July, ten files have been registered by the public prosecutor’s office, eight of which involve minor victims. The kidnappers use various methods, including snatching children from their parents’ arms, taking advantage of playtime in yards, or luring the youngest with candy and balloons.
Thanks to the vigilance of local residents, the perpetrators were apprehended. Prosecutor Rakotoniaina urges parents to be extra cautious and never leave their children unattended to prevent further kidnappings.
In parallel, the case regarding the murder of an albino child in Ankiambe, Toliara, was presented to the Anosy prosecutor’s office in June. While all identified suspects were initially jailed, some alleged accomplices remained at large. Law enforcement has finally arrested a foreign national, the owner of a gemstone mining company in Ilakaka, suspected of masterminding the crime. He was brought before the court on Tuesday, July 21, and placed in pre-trial detention at Tsiafahy. According to the Public Prosecutor, the investigation revealed that the murder was motivated by superstitious beliefs. “The perpetrators believed that using the organs of albino children would promote the prosperity of their businesses and the discovery of precious stones,” the prosecutor explained.
