In the rice fields of Antananarivo, watercress plays an important role in the agricultural calendar. From March to August, many farmers turn to this crop, which adapts well to humid terrain and supplies the capital’s markets. In several areas, plots usually reserved for rice are used for this production during this period, as the availability of water in these fields favors the plant’s growth.
Farmers share the available plots during the season, and successive harvests allow them to meet market demand. “This period is favorable for this crop. Water is available, and we can carry out several cycles during the season,” explains Rajanto, a watercress farmer.
Starting at 5:00 AM, farmers head to their plots to begin selling their produce to merchants and local residents. Despite the morning chill, they also maintain the crops and harvest until 9:00 AM.
To expand his business, Rajanto rents two rice fields for 450,000 ariary for the season. Between March and August, he completes three to four cultivation cycles. His production is mainly destined for vendors who come to source directly from him.
Rajanto sells a jute bag of watercress to merchants for between 15,000 and 20,000 ariary, depending on who provides the bag. A portion of his harvest is also sold directly to local residents at 500 ariary per bunch for family consumption or poultry feed.
However, this activity requires significant expenses and regular monitoring. Farmers must ensure the renewal of water in the rice fields and use insecticides to combat small insects that attack the plants. These treatments are essential steps to preserve the quality of the harvest.
With many producers active in the capital’s rice fields, watercress cultivation drives a local economic circuit connecting farmers, vendors, and consumers. From the plot to the market, this seasonal production contributes to the supply of fresh vegetables in Antananarivo.
