FOOTBALL – 2026 WORLD CUP – Malagasy fans favor free apps

Some die-hard football fans are simplifying their lives and enjoying themselves by following World Cup matches on a wide range of free applications.

Opportunistic businesses are finding their market almost entirely sidelined. Football enthusiasts are seeking more convenient and cost-effective ways to follow the World Cup—the major sporting event of June and July—live and without excessive constraints. Any method that gets the job done is welcome. Given that only one channel is authorized to broadcast the matches, limited to forty-four out of a total of one hundred and four, and that the image quality and commentary are frequently criticized, football fans are flocking to applications available on the Internet. Moreover, most of these are free.

“For this edition of the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, many matches take place in the middle of the night or very early in the morning. I prefer to follow the matches alone in my bed, nice and warm in my room. It only takes a few megabytes of data to enjoy an entire match,” says Solo Ranarison, a dedicated football fan. “Plus, the image quality is better,” he added.

Lower costs

Die-hard fans have access to several applications. “You just need to download them and click a few times to enjoy the game, without having to subscribe or spend a lot of money,” noted another user who preferred to remain anonymous. “I have been using these free apps for years to follow major European or African competitions like the AFCON,” he emphasized.

“Since the first day of the World Cup, I have been able to enjoy almost every match I was interested in,” he further clarified.

It is also possible to watch matches on a larger screen. “A Smart TV can be connected to a mobile phone. It is more comfortable, and the image quality is better. Even with a non-connected screen, there are TV extension devices that you can connect to your phone,” advised an audiovisual technician. Following matches on a laptop is neither very reliable nor very comfortable, as these devices often slow down depending on the connection speed, the technician added.

In short, even though the choice of channels to follow live World Cup matches is limited, football fans always find ways to keep up with the beat of one of the world’s biggest sporting competitions.
