URBAN ART – Ankadivato transforms into an open-air gallery

For six months, the AKDVT Street Galerie project will occupy the Ankadivato neighborhood to make art a catalyst for urban and cultural transformation.

Art is moving out of traditional exhibition spaces and into the heart of the city. Driven by the AKDVT collective, composed of artists residing in Ankadivato, the pilot project “Street Galerie” aims to transform the neighborhood into an open-air gallery accessible to everyone. Its official launch is scheduled for this Saturday, marking the beginning of a program that will span six months.

The goal is to bring art closer to the general public. “Many people do not dare to enter galleries to discover exhibitions. We want to bring art to them,” explains A. J., one of the artists from the collective. More than twenty artists are participating in this initiative, which combines murals, painting, dance, and other forms of creation.

Each month will be dedicated to a specific theme. For June, which focuses on childhood, the project revolves around the theme “Next Generation.” Drawing and writing workshops, as well as other artistic activities, will be organized in the neighborhood’s schools. The month of August, dedicated to hip-hop, will feature the theme “Tsy ho bado” (We shall not be ignorant). “Children must not be left uneducated,” emphasizes A. J.

For this first phase, artists A. J., Naty Kaly, Clipse Teean, as well as Ortie, an artist from France, will create murals to adorn the walls of the neighborhood.

Reappropriation

Beyond the artistic aspect, the initiators hope to generate positive outcomes for Ankadivato. “This project encourages the reappropriation of the neighborhood. A more pleasant environment also encourages respect for the living space and can contribute to reducing public nuisances,” says A. J. In the longer term, the collective also plans to develop cultural ecotourism through guided tours to discover the murals.

The opening event will follow the style of a vernissage while remaining open to everyone. A free concert will be held starting at 1:00 PM, featuring performances by Fab’s Brownz, Yrist, Rebel, My Men Kaid Septic, and Doubl’NN.

Currently a pilot project, AKDVT Street Galerie has the ambition to expand to other neighborhoods, and even other regions of Madagascar. The collective is also launching an appeal to artists and communities interested in this approach of urban revitalization through art.
