COPYRIGHT – Jimmy Hilarion aims to bring OMDA closer to artists

As the new Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Malagasy Copyright Office (OMDA), artist and ethnomusicologist Jimmy Hilarion Rakotonavory intends to strengthen the organization’s outreach to artists across Madagascar’s various regions.

Increasing awareness of OMDA’s mission and decentralizing its services are key goals for Rakotonavory, who was elected on August 6th for a three-year term, succeeding Francis Turbo. Drawing on his background as an artist and academic, he aims to address the specific challenges creators face regarding copyright and service accessibility.

A major focus for the new chairman is the revenue collection mechanism. He emphasizes the need to improve the legal framework governing artists’ earnings and to boost OMDA’s overall revenue to better support creators. Furthermore, he plans to prioritize artist education, ensuring they understand how rights are collected and distributed, particularly in venues like nightclubs.

Transparency is another pillar of his mandate. Rakotonavory plans to implement a clear schedule of activities to engage regional artists and improve communication regarding the organization’s financial management to build trust.

Originally from Mandritsara, Jimmy Hilarion Rakotonavory, also known as ‘Lejim 415’, is a renowned ‘Prince of Bahoejy’ who blends traditional Sofia region rhythms with contemporary music. With a doctorate in ethnomusicology earned in 2023, he currently serves as a lecturer at the Institute of Tourism and Heritage, bringing a unique blend of artistic expertise and academic rigor to his new role at OMDA.
