ANOSISOA AMBOHIMANARINA – A family discovers an unknown body in their tomb

A family in Anosisoa Ambohimanarina was shocked to discover that a stranger had been buried in their family tomb. After posting a notice on social media, they finally located the deceased’s relatives.

The family, who owns a tomb in Anosisoa Ambohimanarina, was deeply surprised and concerned to learn that an unknown person had been buried there. They were completely unaware of the identity of the deceased or the circumstances surrounding the burial. It was only later that they learned the deceased was related to individuals who had previously used the same tomb.

Following a Facebook post yesterday to identify the deceased, the concerned family came forward. “We will discuss with those who recently financed the tomb’s maintenance and those who carried out the last burial to decide on the next steps. The tomb will only be opened in October, as another deceased person is scheduled to be transferred there,” explained a family representative.

The tomb is one of several located in Golan, Anosisoa, Ambohimanarina. The family suspected that a body had been buried in the wrong tomb, as none of the owner families were aware of the burial.

“About two weeks ago, we learned that someone had been buried in the tomb. We contacted all five owner families, but none had recently buried anyone there. We also checked with local authorities (fokontany) regarding any burial permits, but received no clear answers. Last Sunday, we gathered at the tomb to discuss the matter. We were considering further legal steps but decided to post on social media first to find the family of the deceased,” said Dimbinirina, a member of the owner family.

According to testimonies, several signs suggested a recent burial, including funeral flowers left on the tomb and the fact that it had been freshly sealed. Local residents had also spotted people performing a burial in the area.

“We were very worried as long as we didn’t know the identity of the deceased. We feared that a tenant of the tomb might have introduced a body. We also wondered if the person had died of a contagious disease or had been killed elsewhere. We even considered filing a complaint. If no one comes to claim the body by October, we will follow all necessary procedures to remove it from the tomb, either for reburial elsewhere or transfer to a common grave,” added Dimbinirina.

The notice regarding the person allegedly buried in the wrong tomb was published yesterday on Facebook. Just an hour after the post, the family received a call providing information about the deceased’s relatives.
