Hervé Renard is returning to Ivory Coast. The French coach has been appointed as the head coach of the Ivorian Elephants, succeeding Emerse Faé, as announced by the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) on its social media channels this Tuesday.
The 57-year-old Renard, who briefly managed Tunisia during the 2026 World Cup after joining mid-tournament, previously held this position between 2014 and 2015, leading the team to victory in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
Renard, whose appointment was reported by the newspaper Le Parisien on Tuesday, replaces Emerse Faé, who was not retained by the FIF despite winning the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations and reaching the Round of 16 in the 2026 World Cup—a historic first for the country.
The coach, who has managed numerous national teams throughout his career, took charge of Tunisia following their heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening 2026 World Cup match, a loss that cost Sabri Lamouchi his job. Renard oversaw two matches, resulting in defeats against Japan (4-0) and the Netherlands (3-1).
Now a free agent following that short interim period, Renard returns to the Ivory Coast bench eleven years later, where he remains highly popular due to his 2015 AFCON triumph with the generation led by Yaya Touré, which ended a 25-year trophy drought.
Having already won the AFCON three years earlier with Zambia, the coach has built a solid reputation on the African continent, with stints managing national teams such as Ghana, Angola, and Morocco. However, he has had mixed results in recent years, notably with the Saudi Arabian national team, from which he was dismissed in April despite qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, and the French women’s national team, with whom he reached the quarter-finals of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The Ivorian Federation stated that Renard is expected in Abidjan in the coming days to officially assume his duties.
