Power cuts are extending for another day in the capital and its surrounding areas. Due to a breakdown affecting another electricity production site, Jirama must once again implement rotating power cuts this Tuesday. According to the national water and electricity company, it is facing a 15MW production gap caused by a failure at a production unit of the AfriPower thermal power plant in Mandroseza. This forces the company to cut electricity for one hour on a rotating basis in localities served by the Antananarivo Interconnected Network (RIA).
According to Jirama, only three out of the four units at the AfriPower plant are operational this Tuesday. Jirama assures that its technical teams are already mobilized to repair the faulty unit, noting an acceleration of repair work to restore production to normal as soon as possible.
On Monday, Jirama had already implemented rotating power cuts between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM on the RIA. Production on the RIA had experienced a 25MW gap following a technical failure on the first Combustion Turbine (TAC1) at the Ambohimanambola power plant and another failure on the GR1 unit at Mandraka. The company had hoped that the load shedding would not extend beyond Monday, as its technicians had resolved the issues before Tuesday’s peak consumption.
