In Antsiranana, Morengy is drawing crowds and boosting local activity. This traditional practice is gaining visibility in the Diana region.
The traditional Morengy combat has established itself as a true engine of attractiveness in the Diana region. Far more than just a sporting clash, it is gradually becoming a cultural event capable of bringing communities together, attracting visitors, and highlighting the identity of Northern Madagascar.
In Antsiranana, no other cultural or sporting event rivals Morengy in drawing crowds. As soon as a fight is announced, the public responds, confirming the discipline’s popular grip on the city. It no longer just attracts combat enthusiasts; every major event stimulates local economic activity, including catering, transport, commerce, crafts, and hospitality.
Beyond the physical confrontation, Morengy is a genuine cultural expression. It carries codes, history, and know-how passed down through generations. The enthusiasm surrounding these competitions highlights the potential for the Diana region to leverage this tradition as a showcase for the territory.
However, organizing these events remains a financial challenge. Iharitiana Ramiandrison, president of the Morengy organizing committees in the region, explains that costs for a simple event start at around 400,000 ariary, and can reach 600,000 ariary when including artists, noting that administrative taxes and fees represent a significant burden.
