A section of Andravoahangy was plunged into a traffic jam and smoke yesterday morning, caused by a tire fire. Street vendors protested by waving banners and burning tires on the road between Andravoahangy and Ambodivona. “We are demanding to return to our usual location. Why are the vendors located between the public toilets of Andravoahangy and the Galana station in Ambodivona the only ones being evicted, while vendors outside this zone are allowed to sell?” criticized one merchant.
About thirty people demonstrated, carrying banners with the inscriptions: “Let us sell, solve our problems” and “We are tired, Andravoahangy Saint-Antoine, come to our rescue,” according to the National Police.
Law enforcement arrived on the scene to maintain public order, dissuading the protesters to ensure the safety of residents and road users. By 12:15 PM, the situation calmed down without the need for force, and traffic resumed its normal flow.
These vendors were evicted last week. They plan to resume their activities on the sidewalks starting today.
For its part, the Market Directorate, attached to the Urban Commune of Antananarivo, reiterates that selling on sidewalks remains prohibited. “It is also a school zone: there is no longer any place for schoolchildren to walk when leaving school, and no parking space for vehicles coming to pick them up, because everything is occupied by vendors,” lamented Gilles Randrianatoandro.
