Hygiene deficiencies have been identified in several catering establishments in Antsiranana. Sanctions are planned in case of non-compliance with health regulations.
A team from the Regional Directorate of Trade and Consumption, accompanied by security officials from the Urban Commune of Antsiranana, conducted a day of inspections in bakeries, pastry shops, and small eateries in the city. This operation aimed to verify the conditions of food preparation, storage, and sale, while reminding professionals of the health rules to be followed.
Inspectors examined the cleanliness of the premises and food handling practices. They reminded vendors of their responsibilities regarding hygiene and the protection of consumer health.
From makeshift eateries to pastry shops and roadside stalls, the findings are mixed. While some establishments comply with hygiene rules, others show deficiencies that require correction. Sanctions could be applied if these irregularities persist.
According to the inspection team, deficiencies are particularly frequent among roadside vendors, concerning both the cleanliness of preparation areas and the hygiene of those handling the food.
Officials also raised awareness among traders, consumers, and fishermen about the risks of food poisoning. With the approach of the austral summer, they are calling for increased vigilance, as high temperatures accelerate the deterioration of perishable foods if poorly stored.
Inspectors also drew attention to poisoning linked to toxins produced by certain marine algae, which can accumulate in marine organisms and cause serious or even fatal poisoning. Marie-Thérèse Zarasoa, Regional Director of Trade and Consumption for the Diana region, insisted on the necessity of respecting hygiene rules to protect public health.
The sale of low-cost meals or in rudimentary facilities does not exempt any professional from respecting basic hygiene rules. Food safety remains an obligation for all sector actors.
“Faced with the observed deficiencies, awareness must be accompanied by rigorous monitoring. Operators who do not respect health requirements after the necessary reminders will be subject to sanctions, in accordance with current regulations,” warned the team leader.
