In Madirokely, four new classrooms have been built at a cost of 185 million ariary. These permanent structures provide an improved learning environment for students.
Last Saturday, in the presence of the Minister of Communication and Culture, Gascar Fenosoa, a new school facility was inaugurated in Madirokely. This project represents a new perspective for local children, adding four new classrooms to the existing, renovated infrastructure at a total cost of 185 million ariary.
The contrast is striking. Previously, students studied in buildings made of local materials; today, they have access to solid, standard-compliant permanent structures. Beyond the architectural change, the learning environment itself has been transformed.
The project was spearheaded by the Italian association ‘IAM I Love Madagascar,’ led by Ricci Roberto, with financial support from Italian donors and companies such as ‘Romac’ and ‘LAPM Dress Your Design.’ Madirokely is the 19th school built by IAM across the 42 fokontany of Nosy Be, with more projects currently underway.
This initiative is vital for remote neighborhoods where school infrastructure is often insufficient. For children, it means a more dignified learning space, and for parents, it provides an additional opportunity to keep their children in school.
The ceremony was notable for the attendance of Minister Gascar Fenosoa, marking the first time a government minister has attended an IAM school inauguration in Nosy Be. The Minister expressed his appreciation for Ricci Roberto’s commitment to education on the island and announced that an honorary distinction would be awarded to him in recognition of his services.
As the new primary school (EPP) opens, it serves as a reminder that a school is an investment in the future. The challenge now lies in ensuring these classrooms are utilized effectively and maintained for the long term. Ricci Roberto noted, ‘The buildings are here. Now we must give them a true school life. We provide these buildings, along with all furniture and educational materials, free of charge to the Nosy Be school district. We also handle maintenance, but these facilities require teachers, as they are currently in short supply.’
