The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the French National Assembly is back in Madagascar. Bruno Fuchs is scheduled to meet with several key stakeholders in the country.
Deputy Bruno Fuchs returned to Madagascar on Sunday evening. His agenda includes a series of meetings with authorities, youth representatives, and the private sector. He is also expected to visit projects funded by the French Development Agency (AFD).
This marks the French parliamentarian’s second visit to Madagascar since the change of power to the military in October 2025. Deputy Fuchs was the first Western and European elected official to visit the Great Island, having met with Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, Head of State, in early November 2025. That initial, relatively discreet visit was primarily political and diplomatic in nature.
“Although he is not widely known to the public, Bruno Fuchs has a significant international network of influence. His visit to Madagascar and his observations on the country’s situation could indeed be decisive in consolidating international recognition of the new government,” a source close to Christine Razanamahasoa, then Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated in November. “Deputy Fuchs is the man behind the scenes of French diplomacy,” she added.
Deputy Fuchs’s approach in November was aimed at maintaining relations between Paris and Antananarivo. A few days later, on November 29, Colonel Randrianirina and his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, spoke by phone. Interviewed on TV5 Monde after that trip, the parliamentarian stated that “the commitment of the international community and France is to try to evaluate the sincerity with which he will lead his refoundation.”
Also on TV5 Monde, the Chairman of the French Foreign Affairs Committee affirmed: “I am convinced that he will do everything possible to return power within twenty-four months. That is why we must support him. If we don’t, others will.” This return of Bruno Fuchs to Madagascar could therefore take on a particular dimension. Beyond issues of cooperation and development, his presence serves as a new political signal from Paris.
