Four suspects have been placed in pre-trial detention for the murder of 14-year-old Sahala Fanekena Rahanitrarivony, who went missing on June 29. Three men have been incarcerated at the Tsiafahy high-security prison, while one woman has been sent to the Antanimora central prison. According to the Ministry of Justice, investigations are focusing on the theory of a ritual sacrifice.
Sahala Fanekena Rahanitrarivony, a resident of Ampefiloha Ambodirano, disappeared on June 29, 2026. Her body was discovered the following day in Amboanjobe.
In a statement, the ministry reported that some of the suspects confessed to their involvement, stating that the teenager was intended for a sacrifice. The female suspect is described as a close acquaintance of the victim. She allegedly lured the teenager into the hands of her killers by taking her to Amboanjobe under the pretext of buying sandals. Her alleged partner is suspected of participating in the murder.
The Ministry of Justice also indicated that the woman had sought advice from a ‘mpimasy’ (a practitioner of traditional rites), who reportedly recommended a human sacrifice in the hope of gaining wealth and improving her living conditions.
Searches conducted at the suspects’ homes led to the discovery of several items that investigators believe may be linked to the preparation of this ritual, according to the ministry’s statement. The investigation is ongoing under judicial authority.
