A heavy toll. 5,069 people have perished in the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela 39 seconds apart on June 24. This new figure, announced Friday by the President of Parliament, Jorge Rodriguez, remains provisional three weeks after the disaster. To finance reconstruction following the double earthquake that left thousands homeless, Caracas has secured $346 million from the International Monetary Fund.
The tremors also left 16,740 injured. The number of missing persons, which authorities have not addressed, could reach 50,000 according to a UN estimate made two days after the disaster. Due to the intensity of the tremors, several hundred buildings were damaged, becoming virtually uninhabitable, or completely collapsed, mainly in La Guaira State, the hardest-hit area.
Nearly 20,000 homeless people are now crowded into makeshift camps set up in stadiums, public squares, and even on the sidewalks of this popular seaside resort near the capital, Caracas.
Resumption of relations: To fund reconstruction efforts, Venezuela has obtained the release of $346 million from the IMF, which had previously been frozen as the financial body did not recognize the legitimacy of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. This sum will notably allow for “supporting families” affected by the disaster “in terms of housing, infrastructure, and essential public services,” interim President Delcy Rodriguez detailed on Friday.
The IMF and the World Bank announced in April the resumption of their relations with Venezuela, which had been frozen since 2019, after the United States ousted President Maduro during a military operation in January.
