Significant results have been achieved. The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) reports that it has supported more than 500,000 rural households over the past four years. This support was made possible by the $450 million the organization mobilized to accompany rural development on the Great Island. This financial package has largely contributed to the implementation of Madagascar’s national priorities, notably through the Strategic Options Programme (2022–2026) and structuring projects such as the Inclusive Agricultural Value Chain Development Programme (Defis) or the Programme for Strengthening Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Economic Integration of Rural Youth (Progres).
This assessment was highlighted during the ceremony awarding an honorary distinction to the first IFAD resident representative in Madagascar, Joseph Rostand Olinga Biwole. He was elevated to the rank of Knight of the Malagasy National Order on Friday. It was an opportunity for the Malagasy authorities to express the Government’s gratitude for the quality of the partnership with IFAD, as well as the Fund’s constant support for the government’s efforts to increase agricultural productivity, strengthen the resilience of rural communities to the effects of climate change, and transform food systems.
IFAD remains one of Madagascar’s strategic partners in the rural sector, having financed 18 projects since its establishment in 1979, with a total amount exceeding $1 billion, benefiting more than one million rural families.
