A decree has been adopted. The Council of Ministers on Friday officially enacted the requirement to wear “Malagasy attire” every Friday within the public administration. This initiative, championed by the President of the Refoundation, Colonel Michaël Randrianiriana, aims to promote Malagasy identity and national cultural heritage.
According to the Council of Ministers’ statement, “Malagasy attire refers to clothing that highlights Madagascar’s cultural identity or the specific characteristics of the country’s various regions.” The report continues, “It can be traditional or modernized, provided it retains the characteristic elements of Malagasy clothing heritage.” This includes “garments made from traditional Malagasy fabrics, fibers, patterns, or ornaments, as well as accompanying accessories.”
However, the text specifies that “the wearing of these outfits must respect the dignity of public service and remain in compliance with requirements related to the functions performed, particularly regarding safety, hygiene, and occupational health.” It also adds that “wearing a specific uniform remains mandatory when required by the nature of the activity.”
The Head of State set the tone during the celebration of the anniversary of the return of independence on June 26. He had requested that guests wear Malagasy attire, or at least incorporate a symbol of Malagasy culture and heritage into their outfits—an invitation widely followed by those who attended the event at Mahamasina.
