Candidates for the BEPC exam will be required to take the English test starting from the 2027 session. The exam will now feature only one option, as ‘Option B’ has been abolished. This is one of the reforms introduced by the new curriculum. A source from the Ministry of National Education explained yesterday that, based on study results, English is widely used in the professional world and will open doors for students in the job market.
This reform is not expected to significantly change the curriculum for 9th-grade (3e) students. ‘English is already taught in this grade throughout the school year, but previously, students only chose whether to include it during exam registration,’ the source added. Regional officials have reportedly been informed to clarify this change.
Students in public middle schools are expressing some concern. Many admit to having underestimated the subject in previous years, assuming it would not appear on the BEPC exam as per the old program. ‘Even if we want to improve, the teaching remains too theoretical, making it difficult for us to grasp,’ lamented Onjatiana and Maria, two middle school students.
Meanwhile, teachers are pointing to a severe lack of textbooks and teaching materials.
