Callet in “Tantara ny Andriana eto Madagascar,” unfavorable days correspond to the beginning of major or minor destinies, while auspicious days are revealed at their conclusion. Ceremonies such as “manala-falitry” or “manala dika” are performed to exorcise bad luck, especially for the severely ill.
Rituals and sacrifices are common before important life events, such as inaugurating a house or getting married. These practices, known as “santatra,” are intended to ensure a favorable outcome. The specific astrological sign under which one is born, such as Asorotany (Cancer) or Alakaosy (Sagittarius), plays a crucial role, as certain signs are considered formidable and potentially dangerous to the parents.
Historically, the Merina people practiced strict customs to ensure children were not rebellious toward their superiors. Some traditions involved exposing infants born under “dangerous” signs to specific trials to mitigate their effects. Furthermore, certain days of the lunar cycle are avoided for any activity, as they are considered “inauspicious.” For instance, the new moon of Alohotsy (Pisces) is known as the “destiny of abstinence,” during which people fast to prepare for the Fandroana (Royal Bath).
Ultimately, the “ombiasy” determines the necessary objects and sacrifices to divert bad omens. Through these rituals, the Malagasy seek to harmonize their lives with the celestial order, a tradition deeply rooted in their cultural history.
