A tragic food poisoning incident occurred in the Mahanoro district on September 22, resulting in one death, four hospitalizations, and over twenty people under close medical observation. The incident took place in the Manonilaza fokontany, Masomeloka rural commune, after the victims consumed a type of seafood locally known as “isotra” or “laokan-tsokina”.
Following the incident, health teams were dispatched to the site, and the four hospitalized individuals were admitted to the CSBII Masomeloka health center. Their medical expenses were covered by the emergency fund to ensure they received necessary care. Meanwhile, health authorities have intensified monitoring of the more than twenty other individuals who consumed the same seafood.
According to reports from local authorities this Thursday, only two patients remain in the hospital, while the other two have been discharged after receiving treatment. A health official in Mahanoro stated, “Only two people are still being treated in the hospital. One is suffering from malaria, and the other is recovering their strength.” The official emphasized that their lives are not in danger, and they are expected to be discharged tomorrow once the malaria treatment is completed.
Local authorities are urging the public to be cautious about the food they consume. Additionally, they have reinforced awareness campaigns regarding vaccination and malaria prevention, particularly the use of long-lasting insecticidal nets.
