Unsanitary conditions continue to threaten the drainage canals of Antananarivo. In the Andriantany canal, waste is accumulating despite ongoing dredging and cleaning efforts.
Waste is clogging sections of the Andriantany canal. The Authority for the Protection against Flooding of the Antananarivo Plain (Apipa) conducted cleaning operations two weeks ago. Plastic bottles, bags, used diapers, and plants are floating in the canal upstream of ‘La Réunion Kely’. In some areas, waste and water hyacinths are obstructing water flow.
A strong foul odor also emanates from the canal. ‘It is very difficult for me to pass by this canal. The smell is truly unbearable, especially when the sun is hot,’ says Vahatriniaina, a passerby.
The situation is not limited to the Andriantany canal. Several drainage canals in the capital are also filled with waste. ‘Despite dredging operations, some residents continue to throw their trash into the canal. As soon as the cleaning is finished, the waste starts accumulating again,’ testifies Léonard, a local resident. A technician laments, ‘We carry out regular dredging, but the waste keeps reappearing.’
The problem also stems from the behavior of certain individuals. ‘Even though the population is regularly sensitized to sanitation and hygiene rules, many continue to throw their trash anywhere,’ our source continues.
Faced with this situation, Apipa is continuing its cleaning efforts. During the week of July 6, teams removed mud, waste, and plants that prevent water from circulating normally. The goal is to facilitate water flow and reduce flood risks. Cleaning work was carried out by Apipa upstream of the Ampefiloha bridge.
However, cleaning alone is not enough. If waste continues to be dumped into the canals, the problem is likely to return. Apipa is calling on citizens not to throw their trash into the canals or their surroundings. Cleanliness and flood prevention are everyone’s business.
