RANOMAFANA – A female doctor found dead at the Andriamamovoka waterfall

The body of 27-year-old Dr. Hortensia Mandrosovoatra Avotriniaina was discovered in the Andriamamovoka waterfall in Ranomafana. The gendarmerie has launched an investigation.

Tragedy struck as Dr. Hortensia Mandrosovoatra Avotriniaina passed away in the prime of her life. The 27-year-old physician was found dead yesterday in the waters of the Andriamamovoka waterfall, located in the Ifanadiana district.

After being recovered from the water, her remains were placed in the communal hall while awaiting transfer to Fianarantsoa. Her final days were marked by a clear itinerary: she visited her brother in Ihosy before returning to Fianarantsoa to prepare documents at the University of Andrainjato, after which she traveled to Ranomafana.

She reportedly made a final call to her brother before losing contact. Her personal belongings, including her bag and phone, were found intact at the scene, ruling out robbery. Initial observations noted swelling on her forehead, likely from an impact with a rock. While unofficial reports suggest a potential suicide, an autopsy is required to confirm the exact cause of death. The gendarmerie is conducting a thorough investigation.

A recent graduate, she had just defended her thesis and was working as an intern at the Manarapenitra Hospital in Fianarantsoa. She had planned to continue her internship in Antananarivo. Loved ones mentioned she had been going through a difficult psychological period related to personal issues, though they believed the situation had improved.

When her disappearance was first reported, her family provided details of her clothing—a pink sweater, black pants, and yellow Chloé sandals—in a desperate search for information. The confirmation of her death has brought immense grief to her family, colleagues, and the medical community, cutting short a promising career.
