A major figure in Malagasy music, Ramy Franck left a mark on several generations through his style, timeless songs, and commitment to cultural identity.
Some voices transcend eras and remain intimately linked to the memories of a generation. That of Ramy Franck, whose real name was François de Sales Rakotomanana, is one of them. Having passed away on July 18 at the age of 86, the man nicknamed “Clo Clo gasy” leaves behind a musical legacy that continues to resonate in the collective Malagasy memory.
A pioneer of Malagasy rhythm and blues in the 1970s and 1980s and founder of the group Mélodie Jazz, Ramy Franck was also distinguished by an original musical universe, blending rhythm and blues, psychedelic rock, pop-rock, and Malagasy jazz fusion. Tracks such as “Bibidia,” “Mitandrema Ry Tanora,” “Mama,” “Nama,” and “Zany d’Zany” marked his career. Recorded in 1972 with Mélodie Jazz under the Discomad label, “Vavaka ho anao ry Neny” remains one of his most iconic works. Created while he was seriously ill in the hospital, this song has become, over the years, a staple of Mother’s Day, while carrying a special emotion for orphans.
For the artist Rossy, Ramy Franck represented “a phenomenon” whose songs accompanied his childhood. “A monument has fallen. His songs cradled my childhood. ‘Bibidia’ resonated in Antanimbarinandriana during Army festivals, fairs, and events. ‘Vavaka ho anao ry Neny’ is a poignant song for orphans, but it also pays tribute to all those mothers who raised children. I bow before his works, which will remain eternal,” he testified, also saluting his son, Johanne Wilfried, a percussionist and worthy heir to this artistic legacy.
Former journalist and admirer Randy Donny highlighted his numerous innovations, noting that his arrangements were avant-garde for the time and that he was a true showman on stage, inspired by the likes of James Brown and Johnny Hallyday.
Ramy Franck was also a man of deep conviction, having fought in Algeria as a former soldier, and was a recipient of the Commander of the National Order. He will be buried today in his family tomb in Ambohitsararay, Ankadinandriana.
