After several years of work, the rehabilitation of the strategic rural road connecting several high-production communes in the Ambanja district has reached a significant milestone with its provisional acceptance.
This stage marks the technical completion of the planned works and initiates a monitoring period to ensure the quality of the structures before final acceptance. More than just road infrastructure, this route offers new prospects for producers by facilitating the transport of harvests, access to markets, and the movement of people and goods from the town of Ambanja to Antsirasira, via Andoharano. Work on this axis, nicknamed the “Cocoa Road,” began in May 2021 but faced significant delays.
In this area where cocoa and vanilla are pillars of the local economy, the state of the road had long been a major obstacle. Financed by the World Bank and carried out under the Integrated Growth Poles (PIC) project, the works aim to improve traffic and facilitate the evacuation of agricultural products. The road spans 43.9 kilometers, crossing nine communes, with 9 kilometers paved and the rest consisting of improved earth tracks.
The regional head of the Diana region, Brigadier General Louis Francio Marovavy, emphasized the economic vocation of this infrastructure during the reception ceremony. To ensure the longevity of the road, a toll system will be implemented starting September 15, as per an inter-communal decree, to fund regular maintenance.
