METEOROLOGY – Prioritizing the inclusion of people with disabilities

Mahajanga is hosting a three-day regional workshop dedicated to promoting equality and inclusion in the meteorological sector. Held at the Coco Lodge hotel-restaurant in Mahajanga Be, the meeting focused on developing a gender equality action plan for the Masova project.

The workshop aimed to integrate gender equality and social inclusion into meteorological observation and monitoring activities, as well as climate data management. Women play an essential role in meteorological and climate monitoring systems.

“The region welcomes the consideration of gender equality and the inclusion of people with disabilities in the meteorological sector. It is a commitment that reminds us that climate risk prevention must also be built with the participation of everyone,” emphasized Ida Jacqueline Harinarivo Rakotonirina, Secretary General of the Boeny Region.

With the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM), Madagascar is taking an important step in strengthening its meteorological investments. Through the Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF) project, the country is also committed to ensuring equitable participation for women, men, and people with disabilities.

The initiative aims to improve the reliability of weather forecasts and early warning systems for cyclones, floods, and droughts to better protect the population.

Officially launched on April 15, 2025, the SOFF project has a budget of 4.9 million US dollars. Its goal is to modernize the national meteorological observation network to strengthen the country’s climate resilience.

“This project is implemented by the UNDP, in collaboration with the General Directorate of Meteorology and the Ministry of Population and Solidarity. Following this workshop in Mahajanga, activities will continue in the southern and eastern regions to consolidate efforts and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders. This approach will contribute to the development of a concrete and effective action plan tailored to the specific needs of each region,” stated Ravaka Tahiry Vanissa Razafindraeky, Regional Director of Transport and Meteorology for Boeny.
