Crowned champions of Madagascar for the third consecutive year in early October, following their 2024 and 2025 titles, the Gendarmerie Nationale Basketball Club (GNBC) women’s team has confirmed its supremacy. Under the guidance of coach Eli Michaël Rakotonindrina, the team relies on a disciplined and cohesive collective.
To secure this third title, the GNBC players had to battle hard against JEA Vakinankaratra. The highly contested final ended in a 47-42 victory.
For General Solofoson Lucien Rabialahy, president of the GNBC, this success is built on discipline, physical prowess, and team cohesion. “The victory is based on the discipline inherent to law enforcement, physical power, and solidarity among the players on the court. Each individual puts her talents at the service of the collective,” he explained.
Coach Eli Michaël Rakotonindrina, who has led the team through these three titles, has built a group capable of maintaining its performance over the seasons. He now aims to test the team against opponents beyond Madagascar’s borders, with the goal of competing against the best teams on the continent.
In its five years of existence, the women’s section has climbed from N1B to N1A, reaching the pinnacle of national basketball. The club also prioritizes training, fielding teams from U14 to N1A. While the roster consists mainly of gendarmes, it also includes civilian players.
Financially, the GNBC has a dedicated sports budget and is considering expanding into football and handball. The team’s priority remains defending its title while seeking international opportunities, pending financial support and the backing of the Malagasy Basketball Federation (FMBB).
