Primary education is suffering from class suspensions due to teachers’ strikes. Protests in front of the DREN (Regional Directorate of National Education) office in Atsimo Andrefana began in September 2025. After a lull between January and March, small groups resumed actions by burning tires to “make themselves heard.” Teachers have announced class suspensions, stating they “will not return to schools and high schools until their demands are heard and met.”
A brief respite was also observed as official exams approached last June.
“My child is enrolled in a public high school, but he barely worked throughout the first term of last year in particular. This has had repercussions on his general level and his grades,” says Manampisoa, a mother living in Antaninarenina.
In other establishments, particularly in rural areas, it is the students who do not attend the EPP (Primary Public Schools). They help their parents with daily activities and income-generating tasks. On the southern coast, parents prefer to send their children to private schools. The new Regional Director of National Education for Atsimo Andrefana, Aimée Rivesty Razafiarimanana, emphasized the importance of teachers’ commitment to their work for the best interests of the students.
