7th-grade students are discovering new concepts in mathematics as algebra and probability have been officially introduced into their curriculum. Since the start of the 2026-2027 school year, the new syllabus now includes algebra, data processing, and probability, alongside traditional topics like arithmetic operations, geometry, and measurements.
The algebra component focuses on numerical sequences and proportionality, while the data and probability modules introduce students to surveys, data interpretation, and experimental probability. Professor Angelo Raherinirina, Director General of Higher Education, explained that the reform aims to ensure students acquire essential skills by the end of each cycle, even if they cannot continue their studies, leading to the integration of some secondary-level content into primary education.
However, many 7th-grade teachers have expressed apprehension. Manantsoa Rado, a teacher in the Atsimondrano school district (Cisco), noted that while these topics were studied in high school, teachers have not received specific training on how to teach them to younger students. Concerns are particularly high among teachers who hold only a BEPC diploma.
While some educators argue that probability is too advanced for this age group, others like veteran teacher Lanto believe the content is a basic initiation suitable for 7th graders. Despite the reservations, many teachers acknowledge the practical utility of these skills for students entering the workforce. The Ministry of National Education maintains that the reform is designed to improve the quality of learning and facilitate professional integration, though teachers are calling for more training and pedagogical tools to support the transition.
